Connections: Exploration in the Getty Center Collection
In Connections 2 Harry Gamboa, Jr., Nobuho Nagasawa, Noah Purifoy with Cathy Allen, and Rachel Rosenthal were invited to come together to explore, interpret and re-present the Getty Center’s collections and in the process generated four installations that question institutional authority, be it cultural, political, or religious. Their work here reflects and furthers one of the strongest aspects of the Center’s collections—the documentation of artistic process. Artistic processes are those means—visual, conceptual, and material—that an artist uses to inform and create a work of art. The Center holdings consist of letters, sketches, photographs, and other sources of documentation that concern not only the final form of artistic works but the processes involved in their production. In Connections 2 each artist was inspired by the collections of historical books, manuscripts, prints, drawings, photographs, and documents and used them to create their installations.
